ABYDREAMES CLARA BOW Aby n Supreme Kitten and Supreme Exhibit 2023
Abyssinian Cat Association: A brief history By Steve Parkin (Former Chair of the Abyssinian Cat Association) The club was formed in 1975, with the principal aims of:
1. Promoting the welfare and good breeding of Abyssinian cats
2. Promoting and encouraging the development of the “New Colours”. At the time, the ‘new colours’ were all current colours except Usual and Sorrel.
The club formed groups around these colours to encourage breeding and showing. It is pleasing to report that the last of the “new colours”, the sex-linked colours, now renamed the Red Series, finally achieved Championship Status just before the start of the first Lockdown, which was in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
A very long journey from their first appearance in the early 1970s. By the 1980 showing season, the club was sponsoring its own club classes, the first being at the Southern Counties Cat Club show that year. The ACA, which at the time had close links with the Somali Cat Club, was able to hold a Joint Exemption Show. The show was held on 21st February 1987, in the Royal Free Hospital Social Club in London. Best in Show adult: GrCh Satsusai Fire Salamander. Best in show kitten: Crownfield’s Blue Fairport, Best in Show neuter: Chezchats Punchinello. On the 24th March, the clubs held their first Sanction Show, again at the Royal Free. Best in Show Adult: Ch Emarelle Midas Best in Show Kitten: Calderon Blackadder Best in Show Neuter: Djenoun Pellarossa
In 1991, the ACA organised a seminar on Silver Abyssinians to encourage breeding and showing ‘silvers’ as it was thought the colour was within sight of Championship Status. This proved to be a false dawn as it took several more years.
In 1993, the clubs held their first Championship Show, once more at the Royal Free. Best in Show Adult: Ch Charriet Caspien. Best in Show Kitten: Mossmir Scragamuffin. Best in Show Neuter: Charriet Cassandra. Things move incredibly slowly in the Abyssinian world. By the ACA’s 20th anniversary, of the “new colours” only the Blue Abyssinian had achieved Championship status. The club still had a long way to go.
